Doctoral Residency: Student Veteran Prepares to Further Advance Career of Service

As a member of law enforcement and a US Army National Guard Staff Sergeant, Keiser University doctoral student Luis Torres looks forward to applying new insights relating to managerial and policy-making solutions, and more.

Now on the cusp of earning his Doctor of Criminal Justice degree after recently attending Keiser’s Doctoral Residency Program which was held at its West Palm Beach Flagship Campus, Torres is grateful to embrace a life of community service. “The academic support has helped shape the direction of my military and law enforcement careers as it opens doors to new opportunities. In addition to my professors, I especially want to thank the back-office staff members who normally don’t get mentioned,” smiled Torres, a New York police officer and dad to two sons.

The first in his family to go to college, join the military, and serve in the field of law enforcement,  Torres shared how proud he is of his sons Nico and Andrew and that he’s thankful to serve as a role model. “I hope to be an example my family can be proud of,” While expressing gratitude for Keiser’s military provisions and affiliations as well as its solid e-learning support system, he said, “The fact that it’s online makes it easier. The instructors have been flexible with exceptional circumstances, and the weekly discussions and assignment outlines make it simple to follow,” he said. Torres also thanks family members who have supported him tremendously, especially his children. When asked what he’d recommend to others striving to realize their goals, he said, “Just start the process and research thoroughly the academic programs that best fit your academic needs. We need more police officers with terminal degrees, and agencies should utilize those officers who obtain them,” he said.

Keiser University’s graduate programs provide students with the opportunity to pursue master’s, specialist, doctoral, and certificate programs in a wide range of fields.
