High School Students Gain Insights from Keiser University’s Mobile Simulation Lab

Keiser University’s Flagship Campus recently welcomed John I. Leonard High School Medical Academy program juniors to further explore patient care by visiting the university’s Mobile Simulation Lab.

After being welcomed by Admissions Coordinator Natalie Clark and Admissions Officer John Bowman, Mobile Simulation Lab Coordinator Jeffery Mueller demonstrated realistic patient scenarios relating to the treatment of heart attack, stroke, accident injury, pharmacology, and more as ‘Annie,’ a high-fidelity manikin demonstrated and reacted to a variety of treatments. “Touring the SIM Lab gave the students a look into the future of medicine. They were interested in using the manikin patient and enjoyed learning in a non-invasive way. It’s an excellent way to practice medicine as implementing their patient care skills is important towards getting their national certifications and gives them more clinical experience in nursing care,” said John I. Leonard Medical Academy Teacher Tania Martinez who led the group.

With capabilities of the Simulation Lab manikin and accompanying technology encompassing patient assessment, medication administration, and emergency intervention along with intravenous, tracheostomy, gastric tube, urinary catheterization, and additional procedures, learners are offered a multitude of opportunities to grow their knowledge base and skills. In addition, the technology’s SimCapture recording capability also provides continued opportunities to review and debrief each session.

John I. Leonard High School’s Medical Academy provides a comprehensive and immersive learning experience for high school students interested in pursuing careers in the medical field. The program combines rigorous academic coursework with hands-on clinical and laboratory experiences, preparing students for post-secondary healthcare education and future roles within the healthcare industry. With a focus on medical skills and training, students are equipped to navigate the complexities of healthcare and contribute effectively to patient care.

Keiser University’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing program prepares graduates to provide compassionate, patient-centered, culturally competent nursing care to individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations in a variety of settings, using evidence-based knowledge and skills related to wellness, health promotion, illness, disease management, and end-of-life care to improve healthcare outcomes. Successful completion of this program qualifies graduates to sit for the NCLEX-RN licensing exam.
