Alumna Reflects on Journey That Led to Burgeoning Career in Finance

As a South Florida financial advisor, Keiser University alumna Josefine Troneby Mooney is thankful for the international journey that led to her promising career.
While a teenager in her hometown of Löddeköpinge, Sweden, Troneby Mooney said she had always been inspired by her parents and the professions they embraced. Her mother’s career in banking exemplified the importance of strategic finance, while her father’s work ethic and drive as a business professional inspired her to learn more by focusing on economics in high school.
“For our senior capstone project, we created a business that went on to win Company of the Year in our region and got the chance to compete at a national level – an experience I thoroughly enjoyed that confirmed my decision to pursue business administration,” she said.
While pinpointing a specific business focus of collegiate study took a bit longer, the journey began to solidify in unison with Troneby Mooney’s participation as a center midfielder on her local Dösjöbro club soccer team. With her success generating the interest of a Keiser University soccer team recruiter, she relocated to West Palm Beach, Florida, and joined Keiser University as a freshman in 2017.
“Soccer has been a passion of mine since I first started playing at age six. During my junior and senior years, my team and I made history by winning back-to-back national championships—the first in the Keiser women’s soccer program,” said Troneby Mooney, who served as the team’s captain from her sophomore year until graduation.
While sharing that she made important contacts on and off the soccer field, Troneby Mooney shared that her classroom experiences were invaluable. “It was the real-world experience and expertise of the professors that sparked my interest and ultimately inspired me to pursue a degree in finance,” she said.
The required case studies and experience gained from participating in the university’s annual Seahawk Tank Pitch Contest also played a role, as she began laying the groundwork for life after college in her junior year.
“I began searching for an internship and reached out to Professor Brian Bastin for guidance. Bear in mind that this was during the summer of 2020, and while the advisor he connected me with wasn’t looking for an intern, he ended up passing along my resume to my current employer. I got a call from my current employer after one of my spring practices, senior year, inviting me to interview for a position,” said Troneby Mooney, who earned her Bachelor of Business Administration degree with a concentration in Finance in 2021 and started as a front office associate and quickly advanced to her current role as a licensed financial advisor working with her own client base.
Now servicing a range of clients, including young professionals in the early stages of building wealth, small business owners in need of retirement plan services, and retirees with complex estate planning scenarios, Troneby Mooney is thankful to her professors as she supports financial health that can carry over for generations.
“I’ve carried much of what I learned in the Keiser classroom and on the soccer field into my day-to-day work. The classroom prepared me with the knowledge and confidence I needed to enter the workforce, while the soccer field taught me teamwork, collaboration, and how to work well with others. To this day, my employer and colleagues often comment on how amazed they are with the level of knowledge and understanding I had coming into the industry straight out of college,” she said.
For those students who are striving to realize their goals, Troneby Mooney encourages a combination of focus and versatility. “Never stop working toward your goals. You might find yourself on a straight path to where you want to be, or sometimes taking a detour, but never lose sight of your end goal. And always remember: all knowledge is valuable knowledge. I also encourage students to take advantage of their network, whether that’s professors, classmates, teammates, or even finding a mentor in the industry they want to enter. Those connections can open doors and play a big role in helping you reach your goals,” she said.
Keiser University’s Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration focuses on an in-depth study of the functional areas of business, the business environment, including ethical business practices, and technical and communication skills needed in today’s business environment. The program offers various concentrations that allow students to specialize in a specific business discipline to enhance their career opportunities within that field. The program includes opportunities for students to apply skills and knowledge learned throughout the program.
