Diagnostic Medical Sonography Student Looks Forward to Delving into Obstetrics
Keiser University student Crystal Lee Cordero was drawn to the field of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) because of a strong desire to help others.
The Daytona Beach campus freshman is especially focused on the field of obstetrics. “I love babies and remember how the sonographer made me feel when I first saw my son Knoxton on the ultrasound screen. I felt a love like I never knew existed. Seeing, and not just feeling your precious baby for the first time is a breathtaking experience,” reflected the Dallas, Georgia native, who together with her husband Evan has three children.
A recipient of the Effective Access to Student Education (EASE) grant, Cordero recognizes its value to future professionals and to society as a whole. “It’s extremely hard to give up a full-time income to pursue a new career, so having financial assistance available to help relieve the burden is a blessing. In our world today, there is so much uncertainty and fear with viruses and diseases. Being able to serve as a light to those who are scared or worried is of extreme importance. I’m also thankful to my husband who has been my number one encourager and supporter,” smiled Cordero.
Keiser University’s Associate of Science degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography presents an integration of didactic, laboratory and clinical experiences. The program prepares students to function as entry-level diagnostic medical sonographers. Sonographers are highly skilled professionals qualified to provide patient services using diagnostic techniques under the supervision of a licensed doctor of medicine or osteopathy and assist physicians in gathering data necessary to reach diagnostic decisions.
