Now Assisting as a Crisis Counselor, Star Graduate Looks Forward to a Career in Psychology

After first developing an appreciation for the field of psychology while enrolled in her high school’s student exchange program, Timea Aspegren will be recognized as Keiser University’s Flagship Campus Salutatorian at its Commencement Ceremony on Friday, May 2nd, 2025.
“Keiser University has prepared me well by giving me a strong academic foundation, practical experience, and opportunities to grow through leadership roles and hands-on learning, all of which support my continued growth in the field,” said Aspegren who is currently working as a tutor, student assistant, and Crisis Counselor and recalled the experience that drew her to the field. “I once took an Introduction to Psychology class during my exchange year in Arizona, and I absolutely loved it. It was fascinating to learn how individuals think, behave, and function. I knew I wanted to work with people, and psychology seemed the perfect field for me. I am very happy with my decision,” said Aspegren of the experience that provided her the opportunity to attend Youngker High School in Buckeye, Arizona, from her hometown of Kløfta, Norway.
Dr. Robin Schupper, Keiser University’s Flagship Campus Undergraduate Psychology Program Director, shared that Aspegren has excelled academically since entering the program.
“To be an international student, taking classes in a language that is not your first language is challenging. To push yourself to be top of the class in terms of your assignments and grasp of the material is another level entirely. Additionally, Ms. Aspegren not only did superior work in each of her classes but also became an integral part of the Psychology department, serving as a Psychology Ambassador, a member of the Psychology department Advisory Board, and a Peer-to-Peer counselor. Her internships reflected her amazing personal and professional growth, as she served as a crisis counselor through the Crisis Text Line and also established and coordinated several initiatives for wellness, specifically for Wellness Week. In view of all of her accomplishments and what she has meant to the department, she was named one of the two Psychology Students of the Year for 2025. She has the immense respect of the Psychology faculty, and we have no doubt she will be incredibly successful in her future, as she is now an incredibly successful individual,” said Schupper.
Now a four-year All-American scholar-athlete, Aspegren first learned of Keiser University because of its Swim Team and delved full speed into her academic and athletic roles after arriving as a freshman in 2021. Quickly bonding with fellow swimmers, she’s thankful for her team’s camaraderie and relationships that will last a lifetime. “Coach and the team have been an immensely great support during my college career, and I could not have asked for better teammates and friends,” she said.
“Timea has been a true embodiment of what being a student-athlete is all about. She has given her all in the classroom with a 4.0 GPA and is a multi-time All-American, school record holder, and National record holder. We are so proud of her accomplishments and the example she has set forth for her fellow Seahawks,” said Adam Epstein, Head Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Coach.
Aspegren will graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology with a concentration in Human Services. She looks forward to further serving the professional world while also continuing her education to earn her master’s degree in Industrial and Organizational Psychology. While reflecting on her journey, she encourages fellow learners to remain steadfast.
“I recommend staying consistent, being open to learning, and not being afraid to ask for help. Surround yourself with people who support your goals and remember that progress takes time. Keep showing up for yourself – even small steps forward count,” she said.
Keiser University’s Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology offers a diverse curriculum that provides a broad-based education in many facets of behavior, mental processes, communication, research, and writing. Courses include forensics, sports, and positive psychology, as well as the traditional courses needed to prepare students for graduate studies.
