Medical Billing and Coding Student Looks Forward to Helping Others Navigate the Road to Recovery
While tuning into her newfound academic knowledge along with her passion for figuring out riddles, brain teasers, and mysteries, Keiser University learner Tammy Graham looks forward to easing the burden for patients who regularly encounter the labyrinth of paperwork and documentation associated with medical treatments.
Having undergone a variety of health issues relating to cerebral palsy, Graham is steadily working toward her goal of earning her degree in Medical Administrative Billing and Coding by attending Keiser University Port St. Lucie campus classes completely online from her Jensen Beach, Florida home. After navigating the convoluted path of medical testing and insurance paperwork that often presents itself to those experiencing health challenges, she hopes to lighten the load for others.
The diagnosis has had its silver linings she recently shared, as it’s instilled the belief that there is more than one road toward success. “I’ve always had a passion and desire to help others, and after constantly being on the phone trying to figure out charges and insurance coverage, it’s encouraging to now prepare for a career that will help shed light on the process,” she said.
Kelly Addams, the Writing Studio Coordinator and Online Liaison at Keiser University’s Port St. Lucie campus, shared that Graham is an inspiration to her and fellow students and that her commitment to success is unwavering. “I have worked closely with Tammy since she began classes and am consistently impressed with her dedication to her studies, her work ethic, and her desire to not just complete her classes but also to really engage with the material and carry the knowledge with her long after the class is finished,” she said.
When asked what she’d recommend to others who strive to move forward as they overcome challenges, Graham encouraged learners to steadfastly work toward their goals while sharing that her two daughters and six grandchildren serve as a beautiful support system and a major motivation to persist. “Going back to school gives me the opportunity to achieve something I’ve always wanted to do and more than that it’s setting an example for and changing the course of my family’s destination,” she smiled.
Keiser University’s Associate of Science degree in Medical Administrative Billing and Coding instructs students to use the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) as well as the Current Procedural Terminology and Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (CPT-4/HCPCS) to assign accurate medical codes for diagnosis, procedures, and other services provided by physicians and other health care practitioners. Students also learn clerical and administrative functions related to insurance claims, compliance, and reimbursement. Graduates understand medical insurance terminology, claim forms, electronic health records, and insurance plans. The degree program also prepares graduates to take the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) credentialing examination as an apprentice.
