Mental Health Month: College of Chiropractic Student Focuses on Healing Fellow Veterans

As Keiser University celebrates Mental Health Month, it salutes student Veterans as they work to support fellow servicemen and women and their communities.

With the goal of opening a practice to alleviate pain experienced by fellow Veterans and others, Keiser University College of Chiropractic Medicine (KUCCM) student Angelo Martinez is thankful to focus on holistic healing. “There is a need in the Veteran community for a holistic approach to medicine, as many Veterans struggle with opioid addiction and other challenges,” said Martinez who is a United States Marine.

Now equipping himself to help lead the cause, Martinez is grateful for the relief his field provides. “Chiropractic medicine addresses critical health issues without reliance on medications. It promotes mobility and corrects posture, offering a holistic approach to health that counters the prevalent ‘pill for everything’ culture in America,” he said while sending his appreciation to faculty and staff members for providing academic study methods that have supported success.

Leaders in the field support the growing focus on this area of care.

“The field of chiropractic medicine can support mental health holistically by addressing physical imbalances that may contribute to mental stress,” said Dr. Jennifer Illes, Keiser University’s College of Chiropractic Medicine’s Vice President. “Spinal manipulation can help release tension, improving nerve function and promoting relaxation, which can positively impact mental well-being,” she said.

While encouraging those who’d like to pursue a profession in the field, Martinez advises fellow learners. “Remove all distractions and focus on your philosophy and craft, as this will lead you to excellence in your field,” he said.

Keiser University’s Doctor of Chiropractic program prepares graduates to make a difference by relieving patients’ pain, improving their mobility, and guiding them to lead healthier lives. The program combines traditional lectures with small-group learning, weekly conferences and seminars, laboratory and experiential sessions, and clinical training opportunities — all with an emphasis on case-based relevancy for chiropractic practice, a profession dedicated to excellence in spine care.
