Student Spotlight: Surgical Technology Student Mai Gomez Helps Record Video for Major Company

Clearwater Surg Tech Student -1

KU Surgical Technology student, Mai Gomez (on the left), was asked by a representative of Stryker, an international medical technology company while participating at Florida Innovation and Education Labs in Tampa, to participate in an educational video the company is developing for a proprietary ankle arthroplasty product.

Mai gowned and gloved the surgeon and assisted him while the video was being recorded.  It will be available in a couple of months.

“Gaining experience working with actual surgeons from around the nation at Five Labs is invaluable preparation for my upcoming clinicals in May,” she said.

Since 2017, Keiser University Surgical Technology students have been participating at various Five Labs surgeon events from total shoulder arthroplasty to spinal fusions to wrist/ankle arthrodesis. Students are exposed to proprietary, just-developed surgical repair systems before they come to market. When these students begin their clinical experience, many are far ahead in their understanding of the procedures than competing students from other schools.

On its website, Stryker is described as “…one of the world’s leading medical technology companies. Our growth is based on a diverse array of innovative products and services in Orthopaedics, Medical and Surgical, and Neurotechnology and Spine that help improve patient and hospital outcomes – which we achieve through the dedication of our more than 33,000 employees globally.’

Mai could be seen by thousands of surgeons learning about Stryker products, a fantastic achievement.
