Histotechnology program students at Keiser University’s Orlando campus recently presented independent research topics to the campus community led under the direction of Department Chair Komal Gada and Instructor Renee Cabral.

All campus faculty and staff were invited to learn about a variety of topics and to provide feedback regarding each student’s efforts, evaluating both the topic presented and the presentation delivery. To encourage students to think critically and creatively in their approach to delivering a meaningful and engaging session, they were not permitted to use PowerPoint as part of their presentation, but instead encouraged to create their own visual aids such as posters, specimen samples, instruments and anything else they felt would assist in a meaningful and memorable delivery.

Histotechnicians are members of the laboratory team who prepare specimens for research or medical diagnosis by pathologists. They work to process tissues that have been sampled during a wide variety of medical procedures. Fine motor skills are used to cut the tissue into very thin slices, mount tissue onto microslides, and stain them with special dyes using laboratory instruments.
