Radiology Students from Clearwater and Tampa Collaborate in Safety Exercises

Recently, Keiser University’s Tampa campus hosted a collaborative learning workshop with Keiser University’s Clearwater campus. Students from Tampa’s radiologic technology and Clearwater’s surgical technology degree programs utilized the Allied Health Collaborative Lab on the Tampa campus to simulate a surgical suite scenario.

Our surgical technology students demonstrated self-gowning, gloving, and sterile draping of a patient in preparation for surgery. Program Manager, Robert Young, brought his Clearwater class to Tampa to interact with radiologic students and practice with a C-Arm, which is used to enter the sterile surgical field, in order to provide the surgeon images to assist in fracture repair via X-ray technologies. Our surgical technology and radiologic technology students, also, simulated real-world cooperative work experience by draping, sterilely, the C-Arm in preparation for fluoroscopic guided imaging.

Dr. Amarilys Velez (R.T. Program Director) discussed the importance of radiation safety and protection, by standing in the correct place during a procedure, by using lead underneath a sterile gown, and by using an exposure timer. By following these procedures, radiation can be significantly minimized. Additionally, Dr. Velez reviewed imaging on the monitors and discussed what a surgeon looks for when preparing for surgery. This collaborative learning opportunity was instrumental in simulating the demands of cooperation within the surgical suite, as well as, to enhance the student learning experience.
