Keiser University Port St. Lucie campus Dietetics and Nutrition student Nicole Roesch was recently appointed to serve as the Legislative and Advocacy Chair for the South Florida Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (SFAND) Administrative Council.

The opportunity will provide Roesch, a Keiser University junior, the occasion to assist the profession by helping to promote a broad range of issues to improve nutrition and health policy. As part of the initiative, she will attend the organization’s legislative workshop in Tallahassee, Florida and the Nutrition and Dietetics Advocacy Summit which is held annually in Washington DC. She will also assist in educating the campus community regarding legislative issues. “We are delighted for this opportunity, said Dietetics and Nutrition Program Chair Jyotsna Sharman. “In her role, Ms. Roesch will receive top-notch leadership and communications training that will prepare her for her meetings on Capitol Hill, and follow-up meetings with representatives and legislators once she is back home. Additionally, she will also be responsible for planning our campus’ Legislative Day which is an integral part of our dietetic curriculum,” she said.

Roesch is also active as the Student Dietetic Association Newsletter Editor, a Peer Mentor, and a Student Liaison for the national Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. “I’m thankful that our Keiser University professors not only guide us in the classroom but encourage us to seek out opportunities to network with professionals in our fields. I chose this profession as a way to help people live healthier lives through good nutrition and disease prevention, and I look forward to being able to do just that in this role,” she said.

Keiser University’s Bachelor of Science degree in Dietetics and Nutrition combines clinical evaluation, community concerns, and foodservice management into a profession long valued for its service to individuals and the community at large and focused on optimal nutrition and the prevention of chronic diseases. The Coordinated Program in Dietetics is unique since the didactic instruction is integrated with the supervised practice.  Following graduation, students are eligible to take the Registered Dietitian/Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RD/RDN) examination.  Upon successful completion of this exam, the RD/RDN is eligible for licensure in Florida or any other state that licenses dietitians/nutritionists.
