“Buddy” Helps Students Learn Benefits of Therapy Animals

Buddy the therapy dog recently spent the day at Keiser University’s Orlando Campus.  The students of Professor Dawn Klodzinski’s Pediatric Occupational Therapy course learned firsthand the therapeutic value of animal assisted intervention (AAI).
The use of trained, registered animals to meet therapeutic goals is an emerging area of occupational therapy (OT) practice. Buddy is a newfoundland-golden mix belonging to Dr. Cheryl Sheffield, OT Academic Fieldwork Coordinator. He has been a Therapy Dogs International (TDI) therapy dog since 2014. Students and staff enjoyed interacting with him and reported experiencing many physiological benefits of AAI interacting with him on campus.
