Dr. Arthur Keiser, Chancellor, Applauds Keiser University Nursing Graduates Recent Travel to Massachusetts to Assist in Helping COVID-19 Patients

Keiser University Associate of Nursing graduates, in conjunction with nurses from the Sebastian River Medical Center, traveled to Carney Hospital to aid in caring for COVID-19 patients

Port Saint Lucie, Florida– August 2020 – Keiser University Port St. Lucie campus graduates Amanda Bermudez and Jennifer Johnson were recently among seven Sebastian River Medical Center nurses to travel to Carney Hospital in Dorchester, Massachusetts to assist COVID-19 patients. The Keiser 2018 Associate of Science in Nursing Cohort 15 graduates joined fellow Sebastian River Medical Center nurses for the assignment involving the hospital’s parent company Steward Health Care.

“Keiser delivered a top-notch education, as its academic material and clinical setting provided me with a great experience for real-world nursing,” said Bermudez, a register nurse who earned her Associate of Science degree at Keiser and is now pursuing her Bachelor of Science in nursing degree. When asked what she would recommend to those interested in a career in the field, she recommended future nurses delve into Keiser University’s curriculum. “Be prepared to give it your best, and to put in a lot of study time and make sure that your heart and mind are in it for the right reasons – the desire to help others,” she said.

“I could not be more proud of Keiser University nursing graduates, Amanda and Jennifer, for enthusiastically heeding the call from Massachusetts’s other states to care for those stricken with COVID-19 and to offer some relief to their colleagues in the field during the pandemic,” said Arthur Keiser, Ph.D. Chancellor, Keiser University.  Through their rigorous academics and clinical experiences throughout their degree programs, I’m confident they are well prepared to make an immediate impact with compassionate patient care, professionalism and the skills necessary in this unprecedent situation, he added.

Johnson is thankful to Keiser University professors who helped prepare her for her current role. “My professors were instrumental in my success, as they guided me through the program, influenced my clinical path and also had a part in helping me secure my position at Sebastian River Medical Center,” she said.

In May, when Bermudez and Johnson traveled to Carney Hospital, Massachusetts had the third-highest number of COVID-19 cases in the nation, and the fourth-highest number of deaths.

Keiser University’s Bachelors of Science in Nursing program prepares graduates to provide compassionate, patient-centered, culturally competent nursing care to individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations in a variety of settings, using evidence-based knowledge and skills related to wellness, health promotion, illness, disease management, and end-of-life care to improve healthcare outcomes. They will practice in partnership with patients as members and leaders of interprofessional healthcare teams, utilizing the most current healthcare technologies. Successful completion of this program qualifies graduates to sit for the NCLEX-RN licensing exam.
