Keiser University Tampa awards $25,000 scholarship to local high school senior
Keiser University Tampa is helping one local high school senior reach new educational goals with a $25,000 scholarship.
In July, the university partnered with Gentlemen’s Quest of Tampa to help support its STEM Camp and present a graduating senior with a scholarship.
Gentlemen’s Quest of Tampa is a non-profit organization which aims to build up and support young men in the community. The group hosts workshops and events to provide students with strategies to be successful in difficult situations, and the necessary skills to be productive citizens after graduating.
This summer, the organization hosted a STEM Camp Community Showcase where 40 students created robots and pitched their products to clients, including Tampa General Hospital, the City of Tampa, and Hillsborough County Schools.
Graduating senior Jayalan Moreau and his team worked to solve a problem for the school district, building a robot which uses facial recognition to track attendance. His team was awarded first place in the competition, taking home a $10,000 scholarship.
As the only senior in the group, Moreau was awarded an additional scholarship from Keiser University Tampa. The scholarship is $2,500 per semester, up to ten semesters, if the senior pursues a bachelor’s degree.
Keiser University Tampa instructor Adrian Tilman also stepped up during the STEM Camp to help the students learn coding. Tilman added that it was a great opportunity for the young men of color to see a male person of color in the tech industry.
“We pride ourselves in the diversity of our student population and want to show the community that we are an institution who celebrates that diversity, no matter the industry,” said Campus President Brandon Barnhill.
This is the first time the university has partnered with Gentlemen’s Quest to offer a scholarship to a local student.
